Mary Decker Slaney was named female athlete of the year by the Associated Press and she also won the Sullivan Award as the nation's outstanding amateur athlete.
Mary Decker Slaney gained international attention in 1973 with a surprise victory in the 800-meter at an U. S.-U. S. S. R. dual meet in Minsk. Within a year, Mary Decker Slaney held world records of 2:26.7 for 1,000 meters, 2:02.4 for 880 yards, and 2:01.8 for 800 meters.
In June1982, Mary Decker Slaney ran 5,000 meters in a world record 15:08.26. Then she went to Europe, won all five races she entered, and set another world record of 4:18.08 in the mile.
Mary Decker Slaney won the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs at the first world championships in 1983 and qualified for both events at the 1984 Olympic trials.
