Born to a Polish mother and an Italian father, Maria Bello grew up in a working-class Roman Catholic family.
Maria attended Villanova University, majoring in political science. She planned on becoming a lawyer, but took an acting class her senior year, just for fun. As a result, she was cast in small off-Broadway plays, such as "Small Town Gals with Big Problems" "The Killer inside Me" and "Urban Planning".
Bello would later guest-star on episodes of "The Commish" (1991), "Due South" (1994), "Misery Loves Company" (1995), and "Nowhere Man" (1995).
Maria Bello's first starring role was as Mrs. Smith in the spy show "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" (1996). The show only lasted eight weeks but she than landed a role on ER as Dr. Anna Del Amico, in which she guest-starred on the final three episodes of the third season. The show's producers were so impressed with Maria that they cast her as a regular on the show.
She also had a role in the film "Coyote Ugly". Maria Bello has been nominated for a Golden Globe twice: In 2003, as Supporting Actress for "The Cooler" and in 2005, as Best Actress for "A History of Violence".
