Larry Nelson was born in Fort Payne, Alabama, and didn't begin playing golf until he was 21-years-old, after returning from military service in Vietnam. Nelson studied Ben Hogan's book "The Five Fundamentals of Golf" while learning how to play the game.
Nelson soon found that he had a talent for the game, breaking 100 the first time he played and 70 within nine months. Nelson graduated from Kennesaw Junior College in 1970 and turned pro a year later, qualifying the PGA Tour at 27. In 1979, he won twice and finished second to Tom Watson on the money list.
Nelson won 10 times on the PGA Tour including three major championships. Nelson's first major was the 1981 PGA Championship and he followed with victories at the 1983 U.S. Open and the 1987 PGA Championship.
Nelson played on the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 1979, 1981, 1987. Since 1997, Nelson has been successful on the Champions Tour and is active in golf course design. Nelson was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2006.
