John Carlos was born in Harlem, New York in 1945. He attended the K-12 system in New York’s city schools, graduating from Machine Trade And Medal high school, he was noted for his exceptional running abilities in track and field.
During his senior year, he participated in his first international track and field event by running in Trinidad. After a successful tour in Trinidad, John was awarded a full track and field scholarship to East Texas State University (ETSU). He attended ETSU for one year, single-handedly winning the schools first and only track and field Lone Star Conference Championship. After ETSU, he matriculated to San Jose State University.
During his stay there he participated in the 1968 Mexico Olympics and won the bronze metal in the 200 meters. During the victory ceremony, John and Tommy Smith raised a black gloved fist in protest against racism and economic depression for all oppressed peoples. This "Silent Protest" was poled as the sixth most memorable event of the century.
After the Mexico Olympics, Mr. Carlos continued his education and athletic exploits at San Jose State University. He again single handily won the NCAA Track And Field National Championship in 1969. During his stay, he also broke the world record in the hundred yard dash. After an illustrious career in track and field, Mr. Carlos was drafted by the NFL.
America's team, the Dallas Cowboys, had a great interest in him along with several other NFL teams. Due to his experience at ETSU and Texas, where he had dealt with overt racism, he decided to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. John's career was brief with the Eagles due to a knee injury, he only played one year and was waived. The Canadians heard that he had been cut from the team, and they drafted him. He played for the Montreal Alouettes and the Toronto Argonauts playing one season for each team. After playing football, he was hired by the Puma company to negotiate shoe contracts with athletes in track and field. Since that time, he has worked for the Olympics, the city of Los Angeles, and presently he is working as the track and field coach, and an In-school Suspension Supervisor for Palm Springs High School in Palm Springs, California.
