He is a Canadian backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers and former star of the reality television series The Bachelor.
Although he started a few games due to injuries to former Giants starting quarterback Kerry Collins, Palmer spent his entire NFL career as a backup. In the spring of 2004, Palmer appeared on The Bachelor television program, in which he was given his choice of eligible single women, eventually selecting Jessica Bowlin. However, as is common with relationships forged through reality television shows, Palmer's and Bowlin's courtship lasted for only a few months after the end of the show.
Palmer played college football at the University of Florida where he alternated playing time with quarterback Doug Johnson.
He was drafted by the New York Giants in the 4th round (125th overall) in the 2001 NFL Draft. After a four-year stint as a backup quarterback, Palmer was cut on September 3, 2005 by the Giants.
At first, wanting to stay in the game, he looked to the CFL for employment. His rights are held by the Montreal Alouettes; however, the Ottawa Renegades tried to acquire the Ottawa native to be their top quarterback, and Palmer expressed interest in playing for his home town. Palmer's agent reportedly asked for a three year contract in the neighbourhood of $660,000 per year, which would make Jesse the highest paid player in the league.
Locating another opportunity to stay in the NFL, Palmer worked out with the Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks and was temporarily signed by the San Francisco 49ers on November 1, 2005 as injuries plagued their quarterbacks. Shortly after the 49ers' second string quarterback returned from being injured, Palmer was released, but a few months later, he was permanently re-signed by the 49ers as a backup quarterback in the 2006 off-season. He was a color commentator for the NFL on FOX for two games late in the 2005 season.
