Jean Driscoll is a world class athlete, Olympian, author, motivational speaker and advocate world-wide for persons with disabilities. She has also done work as a television sports commentator and is the co-founder of a non profit organization called Determined to Win.
Jean earned a B.A. in Speech Communication with honors from the University of Illinois in 1991. She went on to receive a M.S. in Rehabilitation Administration in 1993 from the same institution. In 1997, Jean was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of Rhode Island and in 2002, she received an Honorary Law Degree from the Massachusetts School of Law.
Jean has won the Boston Marathon eight times and is the only person in history to achieve that feat. She is an Olympic athlete who won silver medals in the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympic Games. She is also a world record holder in the 10,000 meter track event as well as the 10K and marathon road racing distances. Sports Illustrated for Women recognizes Jean as one of the top 25 female athletes of the twentieth century.
Jean has served as a corporate spokesperson for Ocean Spray, United Airlines, Lighthouse Foods and the California Date Commission. She has been featured on Good Morning America, the Today Show, ABC Nightline, Lifetime TV, Oxygen Sports, ESPN and CNN.
Jean is also very active as a global advocate and hands-on coach with Wheels for the World, a program of the non-profit organization, Joni and Friends, that restores wheelchairs and takes them to individuals in third world countries. Jean has traveled to Ghana, West Africa to teach potential athletes and coaches about the sport of wheelchair track. Largely due to her efforts, Ghana sent its first athletes ever to represent their country in the 2004 Paralympics held in Athens.
Jean will be returning to Ghana, West Africa with Joni and Friends in 2005 from October 17 - 25. She will be working with the Ghanaian wheelchair athletes once again and will also have opportunities to meet with Ghanain officials to talk about people with disabilities in their country. Jean is seeking financial support to help offset the travel expenses of this missions trip as well as to bring new racing equipment to the athletes (i.e. racing gloves, tires).
