Even though he was not a starter in 1994 and 1995, he played in every regular season game, recording two sacks his rookie year, and seven quarterback pressures and 3 sacks in 1995. He was named the starter prior to the start of the 1996 season, replacing Kevin Greene.
Gildon has lead the team in sacks for the past four seasons with two consecutive trips to the Pro Bowl. He is third on the Steelers all-time career sack list with 62&1/2 and seems destined to lead that list before his career in Pittsburgh is over.
After a short period as the franchise player, the Steelers extended a large long-term contract for Gildon.
At Oklahoma State, Gildon broke the sack record there and was voted to the Associated Press first team All-Big Eight his senior year.
