The "Russian Bear" who was really from Quebec. WWWF champion who ended Bruno Sammartino's 7+-year reign in 1971 with a kneedrop off the turnbuckle.
Ivan Koloff went to the WWWF in 1970 and wrestled Sammartino for the title at Madison Square Garden. Won the belt the following year. Repeatedly challenged Verne Gagne for the AWA title in 1972. Had additional MSG main event matches against Sammartino in 1975.
Held the Indianapolis-based WWA world title in 1977 and won the Florida tag title four times that year, including one reign with Pat Patterson. Came back to main event at Madison Square Garden against Bob Backlund in 1978.
After a successful stay in Georgia, wrestled for Jim Crockett's Mid-Atlantic promotion, winning the NWA World tag belts with Ray Stevens (1981), Don Kernodle (1984), and Nikita Koloff (1985). He was also announced as Rick Rude's replacement as Manny Fernandez's partner when Rude & Fernandez held the NWA tag title in 1987, but that was abandoned when Fernandez left the promotion.
Won the Toronto-based Canadian title in a 1984 tournament and dropped the belt a few weeks later in his final match at Maple Leaf Gardens.
Continued to wrestle for Crockett and WCW through the 1980s. Wrestled on independent shows into the 2000s. Lives in North Carolina.
