Hugh Downs was the once longtime well known anchor of ABC's primetime news show "20/20".He anchored "The Today Show" and hosted PBS' "Live from the Lincoln Center".Downs also helped launch the "The Tonight Show" in 1957.
The Guinness Book of World Records inducted Hugh Downs into their rankings for holding the record for the greatest number of hours on network commercial television. He has won six Emmy Awards and been honored by a wide variety of organizations and won many awards. These awards include the Lowell Thomas Broadcast Journalism Award and the Broadcaster of the Year Award.
Hugh is the author of ten books that include his autobiography "Yours Truly, Hugh Downs" and "Rings Around Tomorrow", which is a collection of science articles published in different magazines. Down's most recent book is an anthology of 150 essays from prominent Americans on their thoughts of the 9-11 tragedy.It is titled, "My America: What My Country Means to Me".
Downs was chair of the U.S. Committee for UNICEF From 1978 to 1998 and a past advisor to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.He is presently the board chair of the National Space Society's Board of Governors.
