Harry Belafonte has been called "the consummate entertainer." He has been a recording artist, Broadway and television star and producer, and a concert singer. A true renaissance man, BELAFONTE also has long been active in the human rights struggle and is globally held in high esteem for his activism. His commitment to the worldwide struggle for human rights has won him global respect as a humanitarian. Belafonte was the first African-American producer in television as well as the first to receive an Emmy Award. He was named by President Kennedy to be the first cultural advisor to the Peace Corps on the basis of his devotion to the continued fight against injustice.
Belafonte is the recipient of the Dag Hammerskjold Peace Medal, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Prize, and a Kennedy Center Honor for excellence in the performing arts. It was also Belafonte who put the wheels in motion for the recording of "We Are the World", the creation of USA for Africa, and the hunger relief effort "Hands Across America." He is a cancer survivor.
