Hank Bauer is a former Major League Baseball player and manager.
He began his playing days at East St. Louis Central Catholic High School. After graduation in 1941 he earned a tryout where he earned a place in the Wisconsin State League. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hank enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.
After serving for the U.S. Marine Corps and earning 11 campaign ribbons, two Bronze Stars and a pair of Purple Hearts in 32 months of combat, he returned to St. Louis. It was here that he earned a tryout with the New York Yankees where he earned a spot on the roster in 1948.
He would stay with the Yankees until 1959 when he went to the play for the Kansas City Athletics for two seasons before retiring.
After retiring as a player, he joined the Kansas City Athletics as manager for a year for the 1961-62 season. Later in 1969 he came back to the Athletics, this time when they were in Oakland. After a season with the Athletics, he made his final coaching stop with the Baltimore Orioles for five seasons.
