Ernie Els. Professional golfer. (born October 17, 1969) is a South African golfer who has been one of the top professional players in the world since the mid-1990s.
Ernie Els, known as "The Big Easy," has been one of the top professional golfers in the world for the past decade. Els was born and raised in South Africa where he played a number of sports, even winning a tennis championship at the age of 13. He eventually decided on golf and what a great decision that was.
Els first achieved prominence in 1984, when he won the Junior World Golf Championship in the Boys 13-14 category. In 1989, Els turned professional and won his first professional tournament in 1991 on the Southern Africa Tour.
Among his numerous victories since are three major championships: the US Open twice and the British Open once. He has also won the World Match Play Championship a record six times.
Els has also held the number one ranking in the Official World Golf Rankings and consistently is ranked in the top five. He is best known for his participation in golf around the world. He regularly plays on the European Tour in Asia, Australia, and South Africa.
When not playing, Els has a golf course design business, a charitable foundation which supports golf among underprivileged youngsters in South Africa, and a highly-regarded wine-making business.
