Erin Brockovich lacked a formal law school education, but she was certainly instrumental in constructing a case against the $30 billion Pacific Gas & Electric Company of California in 1993.
Her case alleged that drinking water in the southern California town of Hinkley was being contaminated with hexavelent chromium. In 1996 the case was settled for $333 million, making it the largest settlement ever paid in a direct action lawsuit.
Brockovich continued working with her lawyer and went on to participate in other anti-pollution lawsuits. She became a prominent activist and educator in the Conejo Valley area after experiencing problems with mold contamination in her own home nearby. Today, she serves as a noted speaker all over the United States.
Her story has been the topic of feature film in her name, in which Julia Roberts plays Erin Brockovich's character.
