He is a long-time friend of Jack Johnson and his debut self-titled album was released in 2004 on Johnson's Brushfire Records through Universal Music and has already made the Australian ARIA Top-40 charts in April 2004.

He commenced surfing as a teenager at San Clemente, California, and was signed to a sponsorship deal with Billabong allowing him to travel the world surfing. On his travels, he rented a room in North Shore in Oahu, near the famous pipeline, from Jack Johnson's parents and the two developed a strong friendship.

Frankenreiter started playing in Peanut Butter and Jam at the age of 18 but only started to pursue a musical career in 2001. He signed with Brushfire Records in 2002 and recorded his first album in 2003 with Johnson as co-producer with Mario Caldato Jr.. Jack Johnson also appears on the album along with G. Love and Koool G. Murder of The Eels. Recently, Frankenreiter has also been working with Jose Medeles of The Breeders.

Donavon Frankenreiter was released in April 2004 in Australia due to his high profile in that country from his support gigs for Jack Johnson in that country and his surfing career. He has toured Australia in April 2004 with Gary Jules as his support act resulting in the album reaching the top-40 of the Australian album charts. The Donavon Frankenreiter album was released in the US in May 2004. His follow-up album Move by Yourself was released on June 6.
