Don Shula holds an unmatched record in the NFL as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 1970 to 1995 and of the Baltimore Colts from 1963- 1970. He concluded his 33rd season as an NFL head coach in 1995, and his 26th season as the head coach of the Dolphins.
He is the coach in NFL history with the most wins and holds a career record of 347-173-6.In 1972 and 1973, Shula won Super Bowl titles, making him only one of four coaches in the NFL to win consecutive Super Bowls.
His 1972 team had 17wins with no losses, thus recording the only undefeated season in NFL history. Don Shula has appeared in six Super Bowls, which is more than any other coach, and he is only one of two coaches to have reached the Super Bowl during three repeated seasons.
He also advanced to the Super Bowl in 1982 and 1984 with the Dolphins, as well as in 1968 as head coach of the Colts. Shula has received countless prestigious awards for his success on the football field. Recognitions include the 1993 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year Award, 1994 Horatio Alger Award, the Bert Bell Award, and the Pete Rozelle Award. On July 26, 1997 Shula was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Ohio.
Don's business interests include a hotel and golf course in the Miami area as well as a chain of restaurants including Shula's Steakhouse, Shula's Steak II and Shula's on the Beach. In 1995, Shula co-authored a book that outlines the application of managerial philosophies for business and personal success titled, "Everyone's A Coach".
Shula has also donated considerable time, as well as financial and emotional support, to numerous charities. He has founded "The Don Shula Foundation" as a tribute to his late wife Dorothy to assist with breast cancer research. He has also has remained active in the American Red Cross, the United Way and Catholic Charities.
