Dave Bing had a graceful and fluid style when he joined the NBA in 1967. Bing won Rookie of the Year honors scoring 1,601 points (20ppg.).
There was no doubt that Bing would make a huge splash in his NBA debut. As a senior at Syracuse University, he was the nation's fifth leading scorer (28.4 ppg) as well as the Orangemen's first consensus All-American. Three straight years he led Sryacuse in scoring and in the process, prepared himself for a long and prosperous NBA career.
In 1968, Bing led the NBA in scoring with 2,142 points ( 27.1 ppg). Bing averaged more than 20 points a game seven times in his 12 year NBA career. A detached retina in 1972 threatened to end his playing days, but he continued his career with the Detroit Pistons and the Washington Bullets and retired as a Boston Celtic.
He was an All-NBA First Team selection in 1968 and 1971. Dave Bing played in 7 All-Star Games, winning the MVP award in the 1976 game after scoring 16 points with four assists.
The Detroit Pistons retired his number 21 jersey.
At the1990 NBA All-Star Game, Dave Bing received the Schick Achievement Award for his work after his basketball career.
Bing is in the Basketball Hall of Fame and one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players of all time.
