Dante Lavelli was a football player at Ohio State University where he only played in three games. He served in the U.S. Infantry before he started his professional football career.
In 1946, Lavelli joined the Cleveland Browns who recently joined the league .
It was an uphill battle to earn a starting spot, having to beat out four more experienced and highly regarded players. But Dante prevailed and proceeded to lead the league in receptions and won All-AAFC honors in his rookie season. Against the NY Yankees, Lavelli caught the winning touchdown pass in the first AAFC championship game in 1946.
Lavelli's career was full of honors. He was All-AAFC again in 1947, and after the Browns became an NFL franchise, he was all-league twice more and played in the first five Pro Bowl games starting three of them.
Dante caught a record 11 passes and scored two touchdowns as the Browns beat the LA Rams 30-28 in the 1950 NFL Championship Game.
Lavelli teamed up with Browns quarterback Otto Graham to become a prolific tandem.
Lavelli was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1975.
Dante Lavelli's nickname was "Gluefingers".
