Danny Way was 12 when he won his first skateboarding competition in 1986.
When he was 14, Way was sponsored by Powell Peralta and rode for the Bones Brigade in 1988. He made his video debut at this time in the classic skateboard film "Public Domain: Bones Brigade Video 4". This gave him prominent exposure to the skateboarding world.
In 1991, he was named "Skater of theYear" by Thrasher Magazine.
Already a great presence on vertical halfpipes, Way started street skating as it became the only popular form of skateboarding in the early 90's. He became among the best at this form as well.
In 1997, he broke the world record for the highest air on a skateboard. He performed a 12-foot kickflip, and is the first and only skateboarder to drop out of a helicopter onto a ramp. He repeated this feat for MTV in 1999.
Danny underwent 7 surgeries, (5 on his knee and 2 on his shoulder) from 1999 to 2002..
In 2003, he won the Transworld Skateboarding Vert award.
At the 6th annual Transworld Skateboarding Awards he won "Best Vert".
He won a gold medal at the first ever Skateboarding Big Air contest held at the X- Games in 2004 in Los Angeles, California. He established a new distance record of 79 feet.
In 2004 , he also became the first and only person to twice win the Thrasher Magazine Skater of the Year.
Way jumped the Great Wall of China in 2005 on a skateboard, becoming the first person to clear the wall without motorized aid. He did this feat despite hurting his ankle the day before the jump.
