Dan Qualyle is a graduate of DePauw Univiveristy and graduated from Indiana University Law School. He served in the Indiana National Guard from 1969 to 1975. Dan Quayle cam from a prominent Indiana publishing family, he became associate publisher and general manager of the Huntington Herald-Press.
Dan, a conservative Republican was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1980 he was elected to the Senate and was reelected in 1986. In 1988 Republican presidential candidate George H. W. Bush selected Dan as his running mate. Dan definitely was not taken seriously by the media, but became more respected as an effective speaker on conservative issues. Dan chaired the President's Council on Competitiveness, this council attempted to reduce governmental and environmental regulation on businesses.
Dan's career is reflected in his memoirs "Standing Firm," "The Making of a Senator." an "The Man Who Would be President."
