Dan Gable is known as the "Babe Ruth of Wrestling." Gable began wrestling at the age of seven when his father entered him into the YMCA competitions. In high school, Gable was 64-0 as a varsity wrestler. He went on to attend Iowa State University where he won two NCAA titles. His overall record while at Iowa State was 182-1.
After graduating college, Dan went on to train for the Olympics. He was an amateur wrestler for three years and at the 1972 Olympic Games, Dan won a gold medal. After the Olympics, he went on to become the wrestling coach at the University of Iowa. His success there was even more impressive as a coach than as a wrester. From 1978-1986, the Hawkeyes won the NCAA title each year. He is also a former coach for the United States Olympic team.
Today, Gable is an assistant athletic director at Iowa State University. Most recently, his name has come up as a candidate for Iowa's governor. He also has his own documentary titled "Gable."
