In 1999, he created a rift with popular Yankee teammate Derek Jeter when during a mid-game bench clearing brawl with the Seattle Mariners, Jeter was seen in a friendly chatter with his best friend, but opposing teammate Alex Rodriguez, and was promptly chastized by Curtis for being friendly with an opponent during a bench-clearing brawl. This criticism led to his departure from the Yankees after the season despite his clutch performance in the World Series.
Today, Curtis is a physical education and U.S. Government teacher at Caledonia High School in Caledonia, MI. In 2006, he will be the Varsity Baseball coach.
Over his career he compiled a .264 batting average and 101 home runs
