Caspar Weinberger is a graduate of Harvard University and Harvard Law School. During World War II, Weinberger served on the intelligence staff of General Douglas MacArthur. After the war he returned to California and entered private law practice.
Caspar Weinberger served in several political positions at both the state and federal levels during his career. As Secretary of Defense under President Reagan, Weinberger oversaw the massive rebuilding of the U.S. military strength that contributed to the collapse of the former USSR. Caspar Weinberger pushed for dramatic increases in the United States' nuclear weapons arsenal, and was a strong advocate of the controversial Strategic Defense Initiative, known as Star Wars.
Mr. Weinberger participated in the transfer of United States tube-launched, optically tracked, wire-guided missiles (TOW) to Iran during the Iran-Contra Affair. He was later indicted on several felony charges for lying to the Iran-Contra independent counsel during the investigation. Caspar Weinberger received a Presidential pardon from President George H. Bush.
After Weinberger left the Pentagon he became the publisher and chairperson for Forbes magazine, where he wrote on defense and national security issues. Weinberger has authored and co-authored several books about his Pentagon years and the U. S. military's capabilities.
Weinberger continues to receive numerous invitations to speak at clubs, Universities, on television and on radio talk shows.
