It was while appearing in the stage production of "The Loop" that Flockhart came to the attention of Mike Nichols, who gave the actress her breakthrough screen role. Flockhart's rather ordinary countenance and somewhat mousy demeanor has often caught the attention of high powered stars such as Gene Hackman, Nathan Lane, Dianne Wiest and Robin Williams.
The daughter of a Kraft Foods executive, Calista Flockhart moved to New York City to pursue a career in theater after completing her studies at Rutgers University. She accepted occasional film and TV roles but was always overshadowed by her better known co-stars.
Although she had several TV roles to her credit it was character of "Ally McBeal" which rose her to stardom. Starring as a Boston lawyer coping with being a single working woman, Flockhart delivered a performance that treaded carefully between comedy and pathos. Her character touched a nerve with viewers, you either loved Ally or hated her.
Cashing in on her new found fame Flockhart started receiving offers for earlier projects that had been in limbo for the big screen. But instead of capitalizing further on her "Ally McBeal" character or seeking a leading role in Hollywood, Flockhart decided to return to her theatrical roots.
