Dr. C. T. Vivian is the author of "Black Power and The American Myth" which is a book that gives the reader a complete analysis of the Civil Rights Movement. He has organized two national organizations known as Center for Democratic Renewal and the National Center for Human Rights Education.
As a member of Dr. Martin Luther King's executive staff as National Director of Allfiliates, Dr.Vivian has dedicated his life to the elimination of racism. The idea of racism has been intellectually and spiritually untenable to him.
Dr. Vivian's greatest accomplishments have been his use of non-violent direct action techniques to open segregated lunch counters and restaurants in Peoria, Illinois and Greensboro, N.C. ten years before the famous efforts in Montgomery, Alabama, using his youngest son's birth in a segregated hospital at Christimas time to end segregation in city hospitals in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the founding of a program known at the time as "Vision" which is now called "Upward Bound" which awards Alabama students college scholarships.
Dr. Vivian has an honorary doctorate from The New School for Social Research, he has been featured as an activist and an analyst in a civil rights documentary called "Eyes on the Prize," and a consultant for numerous organizations on community development projects, consumer actions, human relations, non-violent training, education, and voter regtistration.
