Koop's medical career began in 1941 and has served the medical community in a number of capacities which include: Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Pediatric Surgery and Chief of Surgery at the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia. Later in Koop's career he was appointed to two federal positions one as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health and the other as U. S. Surgeon General.
While serving as U. S. Surgeon General, Koop was the government's spokesman on the subject of AIDS as well as making the public aware of numerous health issues such as: the importance of immunization, smoking and what it does to your health, environmental health hazards, disease prevention, and diet and nutrition.
Today Koop is Senior Scholar at the C. Everett Koop Institute at Dartmouth College. as well as being an active advocate for public health education through his writings, and public appearances.
