Mitchell was selected in the seventh round by the Cleveland Browns in 1958.
Mitchell fell to the seventh round mysteriously, and the Browns lucked out. Mitchell wanted to start his a career as a flanker but was instead teamed with the great Jim Brown to give Cleveland one of history's truly great backfields from 1958 through 1961.
He also returned punts and kickoffs with great breakaway speed. He gave the Browns four productive seasons before he was traded to the Washington Redskins where he played for seven more seasons.
Bobby became the first African-American to sign and star for the Redskins. In Washington, Mitchell finally started playing flanker and gained a reputation as a great reciever who could run after the catch.
Mitchell retired with 14,078 combined yards (the second highest total in NFL history). He also scored an incredible 91 career touchdowns(18 rushing/65 recieving/3 punt returns/5 kickoff returns). He totaled 7,954 yards recieving and 2,735 yards rushing in his career.
In 1962, he won the NFL receiving title with 72 catches.
He was a 4-time Pro Bowler.
