Russell was drafted by the St. Louis Hawks, but played for the Celtics from 1956 to 1969. The only years the Celtics didn’t win the title with Russell were 1958 and 1967. During his career, Russell raised defensive play to a new level, and he considered the greatest defensive center ever. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975.
Russell was born in Monroe, Louisiana and raised in Oakland, California. Russell played college basketball at the University of San Francisco, and he led the team to NCAA championships in 1955 and 1956. Russell was also the captain of the 1956 United States men's Olympic basketball team, which cruised to the gold medal at the Melbourne Summer Games with an average margin of victory of 53.5 points.
Russell is still involved with basketball in an unofficial, ambassador-of-the-game-like capacity. Recently, for example, Russell convinced Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant to put their much publicized feuds behind them.
