Bill France Jr. has done just about everything in the auto racing business, from parking cars to selling concessions at the old beach/road course in Ponce Inlet to overseeing complicated mergers with captains of industry.
In fact, it can be said that it has been Bill France Jr. that took his father's creation, and turned it into the mega-billion dollar generating force that NASCAR is today. Founded in 1948, it was after France Jr. took over at NASCAR's helm that it has become the advertising machine it is with sponsors and huge television network deals. In short, he took the operation from a Southern, regional attraction and made NASCAR into the international phenomenon it is.
More than a year of his life was spent working 12-hour days, seven days a week, to build Daytona International Speedway, home of the Daytona 500.
France passed on the legacy of his famous father to his son, Brian, who was named CEO of NASCAR in 2003. Bill Jr. remaines active in guiding the family's racing business even after his retirement.
