Betty Ford is the former First Lady of the United States and founder of the Betty Ford Clinic, a center for substance abuse recovery.
Shortly after her husband, Gerald Ford, ascended to the US Presidency, Betty Ford was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery. Due to the effects of her public role as First Lady and the aftereffects of cancer, she became addicted to painkilling drugs and alcohol.
In 1978 she entered a California hospital in order to get her life back from the painkillers and alcohol. So inspired by her recovery, she opened the Betty Ford Center for Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation in 1982. It was one of the first prominent centers devoted solely to such rehabilitation. Being in California, it was only a matter of time before celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor, Liza Minnelli and many more came to the center for help.
Ford became a prominent activist in the rehab field. In 1991 Ford was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and in 1999 she also received the Congressional Gold Medal. Betty Ford has published two autobiographies; one is entitled "The Times of My Life," and the other is "Betty: A Glad Awakening."
