Bertie Vogts is a former German international football player and manager. Vogts began playing football in 1954 when he joined the boys' football team of local sports club when he was seven years old.
He played right-side defender and his tenacity earned him the nickname "Der Terrier". In 1965, Bertie transferred to play for Borussia Monchengladbach. It was with this team that he won the Bundesliga five times, the German Cup once, and the UEFA Cup twice. Vogts remained playing with Monchengladbach until he decided to retire in 1979.
He was also a member of the German national team that won the 1974 World Cup. After his playing career ended, he became a coach for Germany's under-20 national team. In 1990, he was promoted to manager of the national team, leading Germany to a EURO 96 win. He stepped down as manager in 1998 and in 2001 became the coach of the Kuwait national team. After six months with Kuwait, Vogts resigned to assume the position of manager of the Scottish national team. In November of 2004, Vogts decided to resign as manager for the Scottish national team.
