At an early age, Aretha Franklin sang at her father's church in Detroit, Michigan. She was known as a gospel phenomenon at an early age.
When she moved to New York in the 1960s, she was first signed by the legendary Columbia Records A&R John Hammond who did not know what image would go with her voice. Later, she was signed by Atlantic Records and worked with super producer Jerry Wexler who helped make her a star.
