Hailing from Italy, Tomba won his first Olympic Gold Medal at the 1988 Games in Calgary, where he took top honors in both the slalom and the giant slalom. At Albertville in 1992 he added to more medals to his collection by successfully defending his giant slalom Gold and taking silver in the slalom. In 1994 at the Lillehammer Olympics, Tomba took silver in the slalom for his fifth Olympic medal, the final of his storied career.
Tomba is the most decorated male Alpine skier in Olympic history. But his successes were not restricted to the Olympic stage. It has been said that he is the first skiier to "achieve rock star status" as an internationa star and a national hero in his native Italy.
The only skiier to top Tomba's 50 career victories in World Cup competition is fellow Alpine skiing legend Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden.
