Alan Simpson's father served as Wyoming's governor from 1954 to 1958 and as a United States Senator from 1962 to 1966. Alan Simpson decided to follow his father into the political game in 1964, when he was elected to the Wyoming State Legislature. He served in the Wyoming House for 13 years.
Alan Simpson ran for the United States Senate in 1978 and was elected. Simpson was was re-elected in 1984 and again in 1990 to a third term. Simpson completed his final turn in the Senate in 1997.
Simpson served as the Director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard's JFK School of Government from 1998 to early 2000. Simpson is also a consultant in the Washington D.C. government relations firm, The Tongour-Simpson Group, and he is also a partner in the law firm of Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh & Jardine, P.C.
Simpson continues to serve on numerous corporate and non-profit Boards and travels throughout the country giving speeches on a variety of subjects. Simpson has also published a book called "Right in the Old Gazoo: A Lifetime of Scrapping with the Press."
