Abby Wambach played college soccer for the University of Florida Gators. Wambach was the NSCAA first team all-American, and was a force in the win of the NCAA National Championship, and freshman All-American Awards in just 1999. She is also the University of Florida's all-time leading scorer in soccer.
Wambach was the second draft pick in the WUSA in 2002. She played for the Washington Freedom. She played with Mia Hamm and helped lead the team to a victory in the Founders Cup III, and was the game MVP. Wambach received many other soccer-related awards during her WUSA career.
Wambach's impressive WUSA credentials earned her a spot in the US Women's National Team's training camp. Her fitness and talents sealed her position with the 2003 World Cup team.
Wambach trained with the US Women's National Team for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, which they won on her header in overtime against Brazil, 2-1. Since the Athens Olympiad, Wambach has been a major contributor to the USWNT, playing in the 2005 Algarve Cup and a number of exhibition games.
Wambach has currently been participating in exhibition games with the Freedom to raise awareness and garner support for Women's Soccer in hopes of reviving the league.
