Considered by many as the greatest American race car driver of all time, A.J. Foyt started his racing career in 1957, joining USAC Racing that year.
At a race in 1965 at Riverside International Raceway, Foyt was pronounced dead at the scene of a severe crash, but driver Parnelli Jones revived him after seeing movement. Foyt suffered severe a broken back, chest injuries, and a fractured ankle.
Foyts many career highlights include the 1967 Indianapolis 500, were Parnelli Jones' turbine car was expected to beat the field of piston engines. Jones did lap the field, but his car expired with only a few laps left in the race. Despite the fact that it was necessary for Foyt to weave through five wrecked cars down the final front stretch, he won the race.
Foyt went on to win the Indianapolis Motor Speedway 4 times. In 1961, 1964, 1967, 1977
Foyt needed only 10 races to capture his first NASCAR victory. Foyt swapped the lead with Bobby Isaac for the last 50 laps of the July event at the Daytona International Speedway. On the final lap, Foyt passed Isaac to win the race. All told, Foyt won 7 NASCAR races.
Foyt raced in the Indianapolis 500 for 35 consecutive years, winning four times (the first of only three to do so).
He is the only driver to record victories in the Indianapolis 500, the Daytona 500 stock car race, the 24 hours of Le Mans, the 24 hours of Daytona (with Dan Gurney) as well as the 12 Hours of Sebring - the latter being his last major professional win, in 1985 with co-driver Bob Wollek.
He also captured 41 USAC Stock Car wins along with 50 Sprint Car, Midget, and Dirt Champ Car wins.
Foyt was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2000. He was named to the list of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers,1998. In 1990, he was named to the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame. And in 1999, Foyt was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, named as the only open wheel driver in the first class of 1989.
After retiring as a driver, he continued his involvement in racing as a car owner of Foyt Enterprises in the CART series, then the Indy Racing League (IRL) and NASCAR.
