John Barr joined ESPN in June 2003 as an Atlanta-based reporter for ESPN’s news-gathering operation. Currently based in Philadelphia, he’s now a part of ESPN’s Enterprise Unit, covering investigative and human-interest features, primarily for Outside the Lines. His responsibilities also include covering breaking news stories and major events for SportsCenter, ESPNEWS, as well as contributing pieces to ESPN.com.
Before joining ESPN, Barr operated his own production company (2002-2003), producing and reporting shows and segments for The National Geographic Channel and Court TV. Prior to that he served as a reporter for: KSTP-TV in Minneapolis/St. Paul (1999-2002); WBFF-TV in Baltimore (1997-1999); WHTM-TV in Harrisburg, Pa. (1995-1997); WTHI-TV in Terre Haute, Ind. (1993-1995); TV-43 in Hopkinsville, Ky. (1992-1993); and WFIU-FM in Bloomington, Ind. (1990-1992).
In 2011, Barr’s Outside the Lines report on human trafficking and the 2010 World Cup won a National Edward R. Murrow Award for video investigative reporting, the first time that award had ever been presented to a sports network. Also in 2011, Barr was a finalist for the Gannett Foundation Award for Innovative Investigative Journalism for his series of Outside the Lines and ESPN.com reports on painkiller misuse by retired NFL players.
Barr has received a National Edward R. Murrow Award for Feature Reporting. His 2008 Outside the Lines report on suspected corruption on the ATP Tour won first place in the Hard News/Enterprise category of the U.S. Tennis Writers’ Association. Barr has also been honored by the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation (the Gracie Awards), Northeastern University’s Center for the Study of Sport in Society (the Dick Schaap Excellence in Sports Journalism Award), and for his work in local news, where he won eight Regional Emmy Awards and was honored numerous times by the Associated Press and Society of Professional Journalists.
A native of London, Ontario, Canada, Barr graduated from Indiana University with a Masters Degree in journalism in 1992, and from the University of Toronto in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history/political science.
He lives outside of Philadelphia with his wife and two children.
