Ed Rendell has a proven track record of getting big things done. As Governor of Pennsylvania from 2003-2011, Rendell served two terms as chief executive of the nation's 6th-most-populous state and oversaw a $28.3 billion budget.

Committed to make government more responsible to the public and more responsive to the public's needs, Governor Rendell cut wasteful spending and improved efficiency to save more than $1 billion, and pursued a legislative agenda that included commonsense political reforms to put progress ahead of partisanship.

His unprecedented strategic investments energized Pennsylvania's economy, revitalized communities, improved education, protected the environment and expanded access to health care to all children and affordable prescription drugs for older adults.

Under Governor Rendell's leadership, Pennsylvania's economy rebounded sharply. When he became Governor, the commonwealth faced a projected budget deficit of $2.4 billion. As one of his first acts, Governor Rendell cut government spending to close that deficit and implemented programs and policies to apply business principles of productivity and cost-savings to the operation of state government.

Regarding TAXES AND JOBS, his accomplishments include:

  • Providing urgently needed property tax relief to homeowners
  • Saving taxpayers nearly $800 million in the first year of a statewide property tax relief from gaming revenues
  • Investing more than $2.8 billion to create new jobs, keeping Pennsylvania's unemployment rate lower than the national average
  • Raising the minimum wage for the first time in a decade

In EDUCATION:

  • Student achievement rose at every grade level and in every subject
  • Pennsylvania became a national leader in early childhood investment

In the areas of ENERGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT:

  • Pennsylvania became a leader in pursuing energy independence, creating jobs in the emerging alternative energy economy while developing effective strategies to reduce dependence on foreign oil and save families money
  • In addition, Gov. Rendell won passage of the landmark Growing Greener 2 environmental investment package. The $625 million initiative is cleaning up rivers and streams, improving parks, returning abandoned industrial sites to productive use, protecting open space and preserving farmland.

On HEALTHCARE:

  • He dramatically increased the number of older Pennsylvanians who receive affordable prescription drugs and saved them thousands of dollars a year they would have paid under federal Medicare's prescription drug plan.

As Mayor of Philadelphia from 1992-1999, he led what The New York Times called "the most stunning turnaround in recent urban history."

His accomplishments as Mayor include:

  • Balancing the city's budget and generating five consecutive budget surpluses
  • Reducing business and wage taxes for four consecutive years
  • Implementing new revenue-generating initiatives
  • Dramatically improving services city-wide

Before serving as Mayor, Rendell was elected district attorney of the City of Philadelphia for two terms from 1978 through 1985. Rendell also served as general chair of the Democratic National Committee during the 2000 Presidential election, and teaches government and politics courses at the University of Pennsylvania.

Governor Rendell continues to pursue many of the same issues he was passionate about while serving. His commitment to making America a cleaner, more efficient place and to fostering investment in our nation's crumbling infrastructure is as strong as it ever was. Rendell has become a champion for progress in the area of alternative energy, and now serves as a consultant or board member for several green and alternative energy firms, including Own Energy, Element Partners and Ocean Thermal Energy. He has also remained heavily involved in the campaign for government efficiency and strategic cost cutting through his work with entities such as Government Sourcing Solutions, Public Financial Management and Greenhill Advisors.

Perhaps no other issue has been and continues to be as important to Governor Rendell as America's dire need to rebuild and reinvest in its infrastructure. As Governor, Rendell worked with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to create an organization called "Building America's Future." The organization focuses on the need for a more significant investment in American infrastructure projects to ensure that America maintains its place as a global economic power. Governor Rendell currently serves as Co-Chair of the organization and travels throughout the country speaking about this issue.

He is also an NBC News political analyst, providing his trademark straightforward and colorful analysis on both NBC News and its sister cable channel, MSNBC.

His book A Nation of Wusses: How America's Leaders Lost the Guts to Make Us Greatwas released in June 2012.
