The Trojans lost to the University of Texas in the BCS Championship Game, 41-38, following the 2005 regular season, falling short in their bid to become the first team since Minnesota in the 1930's to win three consecutive national titles. Carroll, Joe Paterno, and Bobby Bowden are the only active coaches with two AP National Championships.
Carroll was an all-conference safety for the University of the Pacific and after graduation was an assistant for the team for three years. He was formerly the head coach of the New York Jets (1994) and the New England Patriots (1997-99) in the National Football League. In the NFL, his combined record as head coach was 33-31. He was also defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. Prior to becoming the Jets' head coach, he also was a defensive coordinator for them under Bruce Coslet.
