It was the first World Series-ending homerun in the long, storied history of America's game. But beyond that moment of greatness, Mazeroski was a complete ballplayer. He was a slick fielding, consistently great second baseman whose overall fine career is often lost in the legend of one of baseball's epic moments.
Nicknamed "Maz" and also called simply "The Glove" by Pittsburgh Pirates radio broadcaster Bob Prince, Mazeroski was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001. Mazeroski won eight Gold Gloves during his career and holds the major league career record for double plays by a second baseman.
Today, a portion of the brick left field wall from old Forbes Field, where the Pirates played during Maz’s career, remains standing, adorned with a marker where Mazeroski’s homer cleared the wall. It is a historical monument on the University of Pittsburgh of Pittsburgh campus, and just behind the wall, there is a softball field called Bill Mazeroski Field.
