He bought Boxing Illustrated magazine in 1969 and was the editor until 1973. From 1979-1983 he was the editor and publisher of The Ring. In 1988 he once again began editing Boxing Illustrated , but he changed the name to International Boxing Digest in 1995. In 1998 he founded the Bert Sugar's Fight Game.
He has written over 80 books, mostly on boxing history. Sugar has also appeared in several films playing himself, including Night and the City and The Great White Hype. He has been called Runyonesque by Bob Costas, and one of the foremost historians alive, by the Boston Globe newspaper.
He was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in January 2005.
