Barron had a lot of success in the American Toyota Atlantic series before moving to CART, as he won that series' championship in 1997. While in CART, Barron drove for Dan Gurney's Champ Car team and stayed there until 1999, where before moving to Roger Penske's team following a tragic accident that caused the death of driver Gonzalo Rodriguez.
During 2004 and 2005, Barron drove for Eddie Cheever's Red Bull Cheever Racing.
