Guard Young recently enjoyed more success in as a gymnast in the world spotlight as a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team. After battling for countless years to make the Olympic Team, Young solidified his spot after an excellent performance at the 2004 U.S. Championships and then again at a final training session to determine the final spots on the team.
In Athens, Greece, Young was the first American to compete in both team competitions at the Summer Games and helped the Americans win silver, the first team Olympic Medal since 1984.
Young showed he belonged by opening the team finals with a 9.7 floor routine -- sticking the landings hard on all three tumbling passes. Young's other scores included a 9.475 on the still rings and a 9.350 on the vault.
OU All-American Bart Conner was a part of the last team to win a team medal in 1984, also marking the last time a male gymnast represented the Sooners at the Olympics in men's gymnastics.
Young had an eventful year in 2003, when he was named as an alternate for the 2003 USA World Championships Team. The summer was highlighted by a third place all-around finish at the U.S. National Championships. He was also selected to compete on the floor exercise in the World Championships in Hungrary. After nationals, he traveled as part of Team USA to China to compete against the world champions in a dual meet. In addition he competed with the U.S. squad in the Chinichi Cup in Japan.
After finishing 10th at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials, Young missed a spot on the Sydney Olympic squad by a mere four places, finishing a little more than a point behind three-time Olympian John Roethlisberger. However, Young was chosen to compete on the 2001 World Championships Team and solidified his role as a gymnast on the rise internationally. Young was a member of the 2001 Pan American Gymnastics Championship team, as well as the 2000 Pacific Alliance Championships team and the 2000 Qantas International squad. In 1999, he won the U.S. national vault title and finished fourth all-around.
As a junior gymnast, Young trained under OU head coach Mark Williams at the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy in Norman. Under Williams' guidance, Young was the 1996 junior national champion and earned three junior national team berths.
