Spartanburg, South Carolina is hosting their 30th annual Unity Week Celebration beginning January 9th. One of the state's most respected politicians will keynote the final event.

Former Charleston mayor Joseph Riley is speaking at a public celebration on January 16th at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. It begins at 6:30 and will also feature music from the Sounds of Diversity Choir and Orchestra.

That same day, there are several volunteer opportunities to take part in as part of the Day of Service. It should be a tremendous week of events that pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Riley served ten terms as Charleston mayor before leaving office last January. For two years, he served as president for the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

In the early days of Riley's tenure, he led efforts to revitalize several areas of his city. He considers his greatest achievement to be the development of the International African American Museum that will open in 2018.

In 2009, Riley received The National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama. He is also a former winner of the South Carolinian of the Year award.
