Leaders in the industrial hemp industry recently gathered to talk about the struggles of their newly-created business. Former Central Intelligence Agency Director James Woolsey is well acquainted with the legislation that prohibits the industry from growth.

Woolsey was the keynote speaker at an industrial hemp webinar. He advocated for the end to federal prohibition through the Controlled Substances Act.

Woolsey talked about the gradual warm-up to the business that started with Colorado and has expanded out to 30 other states since 2012. There were several other speakers that also shared their thoughts.

Woolsey served as CIA director from 1993-95. He held a variety of government positions leading up to the post, including Under Secretary of the Navy from 1977-79.

Woolsey was vital to the United States as a key player in treaty talks with the Soviet Union during the 1980s. Since leaving the CIA, he has advised several presidential candidates.

Woolsey was a Rhodes Scholar and a graduate of Yale Law School. In between working government jobs, he has practiced law with the firm Shea & Gardner.
